Energy Efficient Buildings
"We need to understand that there is free heat all around us. There is no need to burn fossil fuels to create heat."
The heating and cooling of buildings combined with transport refrigeration accounts for a staggering 25% of the world's CO2 emissions. Addressing these key areas wouldn't just have a positive impact on our cities, it would accelerate our global decarbonisation goals.
How can we ensure our buildings are as energy efficient as possible? According to Jose La Loggia, we already have the right technology – we just need to change the mindset and culture.
"Today most buildings have a cooling plant and a heating plant, and those plants are not connected."
Jose sees these siloed systems as an opportunity for innovation. As Group President at Trane Technologies, he is working to integrate a building's many functions so they operate in unison.
A building that generates renewable energy and has electrical or thermal energy storage could run its own facilities, including heating and cooling systems, without taking power from the grid. Such a building wouldn't just have lower emissions – it would be Net Positive.
