Sustainable Markets Initiative

In January 2020 His Majesty King Charles III, then The Prince of Wales, delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos which launched the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI). Since then it has become the world's 'go-to' private sector organisation for the sustainable transition, with over 250 member CEOs joining forces to accelerate our founder's vision of a future where we live in harmony with nature.

As part of the SMI, RE:TV works closely with the secretariat and its members to showcase the innovations that are building a better world for people and the planet. See, hear, and read more from some of these industry leaders below.

Celebrating Five Years Of The SMI

The Sustainable Markets Initiative's guiding mandate is the Terra Carta – a set of principles putting Nature, People and Planet at the heart of global value creation. How does this roadmap inspire meaningful action and change? To find out, let's take a look at the story so far.

Patrick Holden

We must adopt regenerative practices at scale to safeguard the future of our food systems. Watch our interview with Patrick Holden, Founder and Chief Executive at Sustainable Food Trust, to learn more about accelerating the agricultural transition.

Energy Transition

What will the energy sector look like in 2050? Fossil fuels currently account for 80% of global energy consumption, but as the Energy Institute's Chief Executive Nick Wayth explains, rapid innovation in cleantech is set to transform the landscape.

Statistical Review of World Energy

2023 was the warmest documented year in history. It saw record levels of fossil fuel consumption and energy emissions, but also of renewables generation. Both challenges and opportunities lie ahead as we work to accelerate a new era of clean energy.

There Is Real Hope

"We've got to come together as a world on this. I feel very strongly that we have to develop an approach which puts nature at the centre of the whole process. There is a better world out there. We can operate our industries far better. There is real hope, but we've just got to get our act together and we've got to remember that the natural world is what sustains us."

Vibrant Blue Economies

Small islands are on the frontier of climate change, but the natural assets in and around their waters have rich economic potential that can be leveraged to boost climate resilience.

Insurance

Many innovative financial products are emerging to meet the unique needs of Small Island Developing States. One of these is parametric insurance, which can offer instant payouts based on a pre-defined trigger such as wind speed or flood water levels.

Terra Carta

More than 800 years ago, Magna Carta inspired a belief in the fundamental rights and liberties of people. As we strive to imagine the next 800 years of human progress, the fundamental rights and value of Nature must represent a step-change in our ‘future of industry’ and ‘future of economy’ approach. With this in mind, Nature, of which we are an integral part, lies at the heart of the ‘Terra Carta’.

Regenerative Design

David Cheshire from AECOM is using innovative design principles to create buildings that store carbon, generate more energy than they use, and provide valuable ecosystem services to the community.

Reframing Investment

Experts from Bank of America and Invenergy unpack the opportunity provided by the Investment Reduction Act policy to drive investment in innovative renewable energy technology.
