How we can reuse spent coffee grounds for domestic and commercial purposes
We drink over 2 billion cups of coffee every day, generating millions of tonnes of used coffee grounds each year. Left to decompose naturally, these grounds would give off 2.3 billion cubic metres of methane, the equivalent in terms of global warming to France's annual CO2 emissions. bio-bean has a solution to this growing problem. They collect used coffee grounds and convert them into a wide variety of products from solid fuels to flavourings, while developing innovative new applications from oils to dyes, proteins and bioplastics.
Though bio-bean is no longer an active business, we believe this is an exciting and viable solution for this abundant source of waste.
