How Maritime Decarbonization Can Impact Climate Change
Reducing maritime-related emissions with improved weather observations
The changing climate, which causes more extreme weather patterns, has an adverse effect on the maritime industry. At the same time, shipping itself contributes to climate change and is responsible for 3% of global emissions, a statistic which is expected to rise dramatically if left unchecked. Spire's Radio Occultation measurements provide accurate weather observations and help fill the data gaps in under-observed regions. These near-Earth satellites can discern minor variations in wave and wind trends, which can inform shipping routes, predict accurate arrival times, and help chart rough and remote seas. Each of these considerations can reduce the amount of energy used, thereby reducing emissions and, in time, fighting climate change.
