The Next Frontier Of Innovation

Harnessing the power of space to regenerate Earth

Astronauts often mention the transformative experience of seeing Earth from space. Chris Hadfield has travelled beyond our planetary boundaries three times, and as he explains, there's a detailed understanding of our planet that can only be achieved by watching from the skies.

The very existence of space flight is a testament to human ingenuity. Today, the realms beyond our own are the next frontier of innovation – and exploring them could even help us regenerate Earth.

The 10,000 satellites orbiting the planet allow us to understand and address climate challenges. Charles Black, CEO of Sen, highlights how Earth observation can "empower humanity to witness planetary change". Sen's 4K satellite video provides vital information about natural disasters, from storms to wildfires, so we can make more informed decisions about them in real-time.

Nanosatellites have the ability to monitor methane and CO2 emissions around the world. This data enables better decision making when it comes to shipping and aviation, two heavy emitting industries. As Spire Global's CEO Theresa Condor reminds us, "you can't decide how to fix something if you're not measuring it".

Space could even add to the renewable energy mix. Space Solar are developing and commercialising space-based solar power that can be transmitted wirelessly down to Earth. Their largest system is an impressive 1.4 kilometres in diameter.

However, these solutions come with an ecological cost. As we harness the game-changing potential of space innovation, it’s vital to also manage issues like orbital debris.

Just as we are now mobilising to protect our ecosystems on Earth, we must also treat the wider universe with a sense of responsibility and care. This approach is vital as we make the next giant leap towards a sustainable future.
