Namibia’s Green Hydrogen Revolution

“You cannot export the wind or the sun. It has to be developed in country.”

Green hydrogen is a key enabler of the energy transition. Unlike conventional hydrogen, which is often produced using fossil fuels, green hydrogen is the result of an electrolysis process powered by renewables.

This point of difference doesn't just reduce emissions – it's also shaping the geo-economic landscape of an entire industry. As Toni Beukes explains, for countries in the Global South with an abundance of wind and solar resources, green hydrogen presents a great opportunity.

Toni is head of ESG for the Hyphen Project: a fully integrated gigawatt scale hydrogen development in Namibia. The project aims to produce millions of tonnes of green hydrogen each year.

As Namibia's wind and solar resources are co-located, no additional infrastructure is needed to connect the two. This drives costs down and gives the nation a competitive edge in the emerging sector.

Namibia has outlined an ambitious roadmap towards green hydrogen industrialisation. Projects like Hyphen play a vital role in this trajectory, with investment, collaboration and skills development all needed to rapidly scale.

The green hydrogen revolution has transformative potential for Namibia's economy and sustainable development. Globally, it's a pivotal part of the energy transition mosaic.

“That’s my hope for the future. That this is a pathway to not just a better Namibia, but a better world.”
