The Big Food Redesign
Highlighting the benefits of circular food design for a regenerative economy
The Big Food Redesign, published by The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, reimagines a food system that is pro-nature, an essential component of the transition to a circular economy. This 2021 report builds on a significant body of work previously released by the foundation, including Towards the circular economy vol. 2 (2013) and Cities and circular economy for food (2019).
The Big Food Redesign was produced in collaboration with Material Economics and Alpha Food Labs. It adds to existing studies by focussing on the role of fast-moving consumer goods companies (FMCGs) and food retailers in affecting systemic change within the food industry.
This report makes the case for a circular food system by illustrating the environmental, economic, and yield benefits that outweigh those achieved by better sourcing alone. These increased benefits are particularly pronounced as for food output and farmer profitability.
